More About Indira Bishen

The Designer

The Indira Bishen brand is a luxury hand embroideredchikankari line started by designer Indira Bishen in 2020.

''Our mission is to promote the ancient art of Chikankari while empowering women artisans and educating underprivileged girls."

Indira grew up in Lucknow, India, a city known for being the origin of Chikankari – the Mughal inspired ancient form of needlework from the 1700s. From an early age, Indira was always enamored by the elegance of Chikankari as she watched her mother don Chikan sarees so gracefully. With a passion for identifying quality hand embroidery and taste for elegance, Indira sought to increase awareness of this ancient art to the U.S., her home country for the last 30+ years. She has a vision to infuse Chikankari into modern Indian and western wear while preserving the ethnic style of this craft.

The Vision

Elegant . Intricate . Timeless

Indira Bishen’s introductory collection includes sarees, lehengas, anarkalis, men’s Indian wear, bridal wear and dresses. Each piece is personally designed by Indira, hand embroidered by skilled female artisans in India and does not include a trace of machine work. Indira works closely with her clients to customize each outfit to fulfill their vision and has worked with multiple brides over the last two years. Her bridal work has been featured in prominent magazines such as South Asian Bride Magazine, Maharani Weddings and Wedding Sutra to name a few.

Economic Empowerment

Our vision is to promote the ancient art of Chikankari while empowering female artisans with fair wages to help them gain financial independence. We exclusively employ local female embroiderers in India who are often discriminately excluded from the workforce or exploited by brokers / middlemen.

Supporting Girls Education

A portion of our annual profits will be donated to the Global Girls Scholarship Foundation – a non-profit enterprise founded by Indira and her husband, Shyam Bishen, focused on sponsoring education for underprivileged girls in developing countries. The foundation currently has more than 30 candidates on scholarship across India and Africa.
